12 x 36 Randall Sellers in another Los Angeles exhibit tonight.

The 12 x 36 show is getting a really positive response. In the mean time, Randall Sellers, one of the Philly artists in the show is also having a solo show at another Los Angeles gallery tonight: Richard Heller Gallery. 5pm to 7pm...make it quick but make it over there!

These drawings are only about 10" wide!!

His stories are actually very personal to me....which I also love because I don't know the guy, but it is a reminder of the collective unconscious, the patterns in our lives, the overlaps, the genuine nature and intrinsic naturalness of it all.

Kind of like how he ended up in the 12 x 36 show too - we are all connected.

12 x 36 LA Installation & Opening Highlights

We have been getting quite a few compliments on the installation...

had to go a bit more progressive here in LA, out of necessity really - but the results are great.

People are saying that the installation of the show is a great reflection of the concept; LOMO is such a fun casual camera, the work is fun and spontaneous yet well thought-out, the concept is interactive between the artists and their environments.

Therefore, having an interactive installation format and semi-formal approach is a perfect translation here.

We like the installations at the other 2 galleries also - each space providing a different perspective - which is another important point about the show:

How 12 artists can be brought together in one show, but across the globe at once and how we can all be the same, but different.

Also - for all of you Cubico Magazine readers...Kelly rang me up and they are going to be coming by the Los Angeles 12x36 show for some shots in conjunction with a video interview they have posted of Estevan Oriol going on right now.

One of the more innovative photography exhibits will hit the world in three different places, at the same time, with the exact same content, this weekend. Curious? So were we.
222gallery, Gallery Revisited, and ArtSpaceHue present 12X36 A LOCAL LENS, a simultaneous exhibition held in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Seoul, curated by Benjamin Kaplan. Using artists as representatives of local culture, this exhibition investigates the relationship between local space and local culture in three distinct urban environments through the use of traditional photography.
The title, 12X36, refers to the twelve selected artists who will each present 36 photographs for the exhibition. Participating Philadelphia artists include: Melissa Farley, Dan Murphy, Ted Passon, and Randall Sellers.
Los Angeles artists include: Andy Bruntel,
Michael Hsiung,
Estevan Oriol (whose sick Snoop portrait done for this show is shown)

and Jessica Robbins.
Finally, participating Seoul artists are: WK, Yangachi, Haelan Kim, and
Yeji Yun.

In contrast to digital photography, which has become commonplace and easily mutable, the invited artists were asked to capture their local reality using traditional photographic methods.
Identical 35mm cameras, loaded with only one roll of thirty-six-exposure color film, were shipped to each selected artist.
They were then asked to return the camera and exposed but unprocessed film, which, once received, was developed and printed as an enlarged contact sheet (16”x20”).

This proof was shown to the artist for their selection of three negatives to be enlarged as 11”x14” prints. The contact sheet and chosen prints are printed in triplicate, with one set shipped to ArtSpaceHue in Seoul, the other to The Gallery Revisted in Los Angeles, and the third to Philadelphia and is exhibited at 222gallery.

All work is displayed in a uniform manner across all three galleries. Cameras and other artifacts from the creation of the work will also be on display and opening receptions are held on the same date and time in each city. What could be cooler than that? The gallery is located behind a boutique - enter through the boutique and walk back...you can't miss it.

There will be full-roll contact sheets to view each artists suite of photographs.

STATEMENT
Urban architecture does more than provide shelter for its inhabitants; the unique space of a city also plays a crucial role in the formation of local culture. It sets the stage for life to occur and creates a framework for communication and movement. Often, the lifestyle of a city’s residents can be traced back to the physical environment itself.

Like other inhabitants, artists are also affected by the physical space of a city. Using artists as representatives of local culture, we seek to investigate the relationship between local space and local culture in three distinct urban environments.

Artists are offered an opportunity to reflect on their surroundings in a uniform medium that may be a departure from their usual means and methods. The photographic medium, and the limit of 36 exposures will give these works a time-bound and immediate quality that will speak of their place, their culture and a specific moment in time.

EXHIBITION
The exhibition features pertinent artifacts and the photographs, but collateral information in the gallery only includes the artists’ name and current place of residence. From a pure visual standpoint, viewers are able to extract basic information about each city. By going to the gallery in person and experiencing the show, viewers participate in a dialogue about local realities. Gallery visitors may be residents of the city or not, but each visitor carries their own background into the gallery and will be affected by each piece in a different way.

Rumor has it, we will also have LOMO cameras for sale,
and that there will be an exhibition catalog as well.

12 x 36 and LOMO is coming to L.A. April 5th!!

I am totally excited about the show coming up in April.

Two of the artists in the 12 x 36 show are Gallery Revisited regulars:
Michael Hsiung and Jessica Robbins.

They currently have work up in our 4 year anniversary show.
It is a real eclectic group show, featuring one piece by each artist that has had a solo show at Gallery Revisited since we opened in 2003.
The work that Michael and Jessica will be doing for the 12 x 36 show should be exciting to see - a real departure from their norm.
Especially since photography is not their usual medium.
Michael does narrative drawings
and Jessica is a painter.

The premise that Benjamin Kaplan came up with is pretty cool - LOMO sent cameras to each of the 12 artists in the show...they each took one roll of film.
3 images from each artist will be show in the show, along with the proof sheet of the entire roll of film - courtesy of ICON.

And I am happy to host all of the artists....this should be one to see for sure.

Big Kids/Little Kids Art Show Tour

John Freeborn’s booktour of Big Kids / Little Kids begins on January 4th, in Philadelphia, at the 222 Gallery. The show will be moving to New York, LA, Houston, and Raleigh, taking the art of Philly within the pages of Freeborn’s book. At the Philadelphia opening, artist Andrew Jeffery Wright will reveal his limited edition dust jacket for the book, which is limited to a pressing of 50.

John Freeborn’s Big Kids/Little Kids introduces the reader to the contemporary art movement here in Philadelphia, spanning eight years of work, artists from places like Space 1026, 1Pixel, 222 Gallery, Spector, and artists from outside Philly that have contributed to these spaces and the scene.
